The Germans who settled in colonial Pennsylvania brought their beloved music with them to the new world. Music was a part of every religious service and Christmas was a special time for great musical celebration. The Anabaptists allowed only vocal music during their services, however the other German sects such as the Moravian, Lutheran and Reformed congregations encouraged the use of instruments for sacred as well as secular music. Musical skills were so highly developed in the Moravian community of Bethlehem, that it was considered to be the musical capital of colonial America. In sharp contrast were the neighboring Quakers who regarded music-making as a “seductive vanity.” The early Pennsylvania Germans established many of the Christmas traditions (such as the Christmas tree, candles placed in windows and their music) that are still celebrated in the United States today.
The sacred and secular music included in this CD features instrumental pieces that 18th and 19th-century Pennsylvania German immigrants and their families would have sung or listened to in church, Sunday School or at home. Many of these musical treasures, found in Sarajane’s great-great-grandmother’s Lutheran Sunday School books and hymnals, continue to be traditional favorites for all listeners.
