Past and Present, Secular and Sacred Music of the Pennsylvania Germans. A CD by Sarajane Williams. (solo instrumental harp performances)
Most of the beloved folk harps of Germany were left behind as their owners, who were in search of religious freedom, land and new opportunities, embarked on their arduous and costly journeys to the New World. Upon their arrival, the industrious and creative Pennsylvania Germans established singing schools in their communities, built the first church organs, created the first American orchestra, and performed music of the great European masters. In great contrast to the Puritans of New England, who were prohibited from participating in music, the Pennsylvania Germans brought music, art and independent thought to America. Religious leaders from the Moravian, Lutheran, Reformed, Anabaptist, and Dunker religions, as well as many other sects, offered traditional German hymns and new compositions to their devout congregations. Secular music, influenced by the English, Scots/Irish and other neighbors, was sung or played during daily activities, holidays, festivities or a militia march. In this CD, Williams reconnects the voices of folk and concert harps with secular and sacred music that was dear to the colonial Pennsylvania German settlers of the 18th and early 19th centuries.
